Biometrics and Privacy

Synopsis:   This presentation examines the privacy implications of the use of biometrics in a number of application areas, especially federal government services. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has recently issued a guidance and discussion paper on privacy issues associated with the use of biometrics. Topics to be discussed include: biometric modalities, , government applications, appropriateness of biometrics in certain scenarios, key privacy principles applied to biometrics, biometrics as a privacy enhancing technology, personal and social impacts

 

Dr. Andrew Patrick is an IT Research Analyst at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada where he examines the privacy implications of new and existing technologies. He is also an Adjunct Research Professor in the departments of Psychology and Computer Science at Carleton University where he conducts research on usable security and trustable privacy protection. Andrew has also worked at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Nortel, and the Communications Research Centre (CRC).
